Flow Meter Heating

Using Limpet Heaters to Keep Mass Flow Meters from Viscous Blockages

An AlphaLimpet heating system fitted to a Coriolis mass flow meter.

There are a number of types of flow meter used in industrial applications, including Coriolis meters and electromagnetic flow meters.  Limpets can be fitted onto almost every type of flow meter that requires heat to prevent cool down of product during stationary batching cycles.

Where other technologies may struggle to impart heat or have reduced lifecycle due to deterioration or burn out, Limpet heaters provide accurate temperature control where it is needed by using custom designed, profiled aluminium adaptor blocks that fit snugly to the meter body and provide a heat reservoir.

Meters can be heated using several different types of Limpet:

Manufacturers whose meters can be heated by Limpets

Limpet heaters can be used to heat most brands of mass flow meter, including those produced by ABB, Burkert,Bronkhorst, Emerson (Micro Motion), Endress + Hauser, Grayco, Kobold, Krohne, Oval, Riels, Siemens, Sierra, and Yokogawa.

Example of a mass flow meter heating application:

The Limpet Heating Story

  • The installation consisted of a tank linked to a centrifugal pump and Coriolis meter, both of which required heating to a temperature of 80°C.

  • An AlphaLimpet provided accurate temperature control and was mounted onto an aluminium heat transfer plate that was attached to two custom-designed aluminium 'saddle' blocks that fitted snugly onto the body of the Coriolis meter.
  • The saddles were secured to the meter using U-bolts, enabling simple and rapid installation and providing excellent heat transfer into the meter body.

  • Although the system was not insulated, the heating system worked perfectly, despite the relatively high temperature required.
